As COVID-19 surge looms, new Knox County task force works to expand hospital capacity

As a wave of COVID-19 cases is projected to roll across East Tennessee in the coming weeks, a new task force is urgently working to expand hospital capacity, Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon told Knox News.

The task force first met Saturday, one day after Gov. Bill Lee came to Knoxville and warned of the potential surge in coronavirus cases facing Tennessee.

The surge task force — made up of hospital, health department and city and county leaders —  is taking into account the need to treat people in surrounding counties who rely on Knoxville-based hospitals, Kincannon said in a statement to Knox News on Saturday evening.

“The task force, led by Dr. Keith Gray of UT Medical Center, is working quickly to confirm this regional surge plan,” Kincannon said.
