Bassmaster Elite kicks off in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – A hundred anglers from all across the country are competing for a top prize of $100,000. That’s the prize for the winner of the Bassmaster Elite, which kicked off this week in Knoxville.

Fishers came to Volunteer Landing at around 3 p.m. to do weigh-ins, including a local fisherman, Brandon Card. Card grew up in Caryville and has fished the Douglas Lake and in Loudon.

“In March and April, East Tennessee is phenomenal fishing, I mean you can catch them in any way you want to catch them, but right now we’re a little bit early, the water is really cold, and the fish are just a little more lethargic,” Card said of the challenges the fishers will face. “This week it’s been a pretty challenging week for us. We’ve had warm weather, but the water temperature is still cold.”

The water temperature isn’t the only thing to cool down. Thursday was a pretty warm day, despite the time of year, but the next few days will bring rain and chill to the area. That might drive crowds away, but Card said it will be better for fishing.
