KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Wind-driven wildfires continue to burn within the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The fires led to the immediate closure of several trails and campsites on Saturday.
The park service said Sunday night that the Thomas Divide Complex Fire continues burning east of Bryson City, NC and north into the National Park. About 46% of the the 750-acre fire is within the park boundary. Crews were hampered by high winds and low humidity today. As of 8 p.m. Sunday, the fire is about 30 percent contained, park officials said.
