KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The National Day of Prayer can be traced back to 1775 when the first Continental Congress called for a National Day of Prayer to get God’s help to form our nation. Abraham Lincoln also called for such a day.

Then NDP became official in 1952 by a bill initiated by Conrad Hilton, of Hilton Hotels and Frank Carlson Senator from Kansas, and then signed by President Harry S Truman. Then in 1988 President Ronald Regan signed a bill into law designating The National Day of Prayer to be the first Thursday in May each year. This is the 70th year of observance.
